How Firm A Foundation
Early American melody, music arr. by Wade Williams

This early American melody has been in the church since at least the late 1700's. It could have been named Promises from the Creator of the Universe. One of the reasons the lyrics to this song are so powerful is that they are paraphrasing God's words.

Isaiah 43:1-2
But now, O Israel, the LORD who created you says: "Do not be afraid, for I have ransomed you. I have called you by name; you are Mine. When you go through deep waters and great trouble, I will be with you. When you go through rivers of difficulty, you will not drown! When you walk through the fire of oppression, you will not be burned up; the flames will not consume you."

Deuteronomy 31:8
Do not be afraid or discouraged, for the LORD is the one who goes before you. He will be with you; He will neither fail you nor forsake you."

Psalm 118:5-6
In my distress I prayed to the LORD, and the LORD answered me and rescued me.
The LORD is for me, so I will not be afraid. What can mere mortals do to me?

In modern language, the lyrics are saying:
Children of God, what a firm foundation is laid for your faith in His excellent word!
What more can He say than He has already said to you? ...to you who have fled to Jesus for refuge.

Do not fear; I am with you. Do not be discouraged or apprehensive;
for I am your God, and I will continue to give you relief and assistance.
I will strengthen you, I will help you, and I will cause you to stand.
I will uphold you by My righteous, all-powerful hand.

When your path leads through fiery trials, My all-sufficient grace will sustain you.
The flame won't overwhelm you; it only lasts a little while.
I have designed and planned it from an eternal perspective for your benefit.
I am refining you and burning away the contaminants that pollute you,
in order to purify that which I created in you.

I absolutely will not abandon all who have placed their trust, confidence, and peace of mind in Jesus Christ.
I will not let the Evil One conquer you.
Even though all Hell tries to shake and intimidate you, I will never, never, never forsake, desert, or leave those who come to Me and trust in Me for their refuge.
